Outside printable margins

J

Jenny

When I try to set margins at 0.5" all the way around a
document, I often get an error message saying that one of
my margins is outside the printable area. When I allow
the system to fix the problem it resets the left margin to
2.67"

Since the normal default left margin is 1.25", this
setting cannot be the minimum allowable margin, yet it
will not let me set it for anything less. If I go ahead
and print ignoring the error message I will get a document
with a wide left margin.

The only way I've been able to resolve this is to exit
Word and restart it, but since this happens frequently
this is a problem. Any ideas?

This is a fairly common problem lately, judging by the
number of times it appears in this message board. Here
is an answer from an MS expert on page 7...

There is a known conflict between Word 2002 and the HP
drivers for some
LaserJets that is characterized by the 2.67" margin.
The "margin fix"
drivers at
http://www.hp.com/pond/ljbeta/index.html reportedly solve
the problem (and
are available for the LJ 4000).

I haven't been able to try this yet as I am on a LAN which
I don't have any control over. A couple of things I've
done to bypass the problem:
- Set margins to 1" (or whatever) and ignore the offer
to fix margins. When printing, in the printer config, set
paper type to legal and then print; this usually tricks
the printer into coming out correctly. OR...
- In the print dialog, set the printer to another
printer which doesn't cause this 2.67" problem (easy for
me on a LAN, maybe not so easy at home). Set margins like
normal. Then when actually printing, in the print dialog
set output printer back to the original one and hit print.
This has worked every time so far! Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I used a HP Deskjet 840c and I get this error
when trying to print addresses on envelopes (DL size). It isn;t
usually too much of a hassle because I just hit OK when the asked if I
want to continue and it then prints fine. I only tend to do one or two
envelopes at a time.

I'll try the patch when I'm less busy and see what happens.

By the way, I'm pretty sure I used to get this with earlier versions
of Word as well.

Cheers,

Mike

Jenny: Check the paper size everywhere. I've had that happen before, and I'm trying to remember what I did to cure it!
