Overly Condensed Type

Why does Word X sometimes display type in an overly condensed manner (it's difficult to even see spaces between words), regardless of font?

What happens when you select the condensed text and key Control-Spacebar?

Clive,

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately, nothing happens when I select the text and control-spacebar. What is supposed to happen?

Control-Spacebar restores the characters to the characteristics of the
underlying style. I would then know which of two approaches to take. Now I
know! ;-)

Now select a couple of letters, key Command-d and click the Character
Spacing button. What does it say next to the Spacing pop-down?

By "sometimes", do you mean that a given piece of text sometimes looks
condensed and sometimes doesn't? Or certain documents? How about blank new
documents?

When the fault occurs, is it in the entire document in question? How have
you formatted the document?

Cheers,

Clive: thanks so much for your ongoing patience and help.

I looked for the "character spacing" button in Word help, and didn't find it. Where is it located? Also, by "sometimes," I mean that the condensed text usually occurs on one of the lab Macs when creating a new document. In that environment, I have no idea what a previous user has done to the formatting preferences. It has not happened on my personal computer. Is there a way to reset preferences to default?

When the fault occurs, it is the entire document.

Thanks again for your help!
