There is no overtype mode button on the status bar in Word 2008. Anyone know how to put it there?

As far as I know, you can¹t customize the Status Bar. However the Overtype
command is available for Toolbar Customization. Go to View>Customize
Toolbars and Menus and click on the Toolbars & Menus tab. Decide what menu
you¹d like to add the command to (or create your own custom toolbar) and
select it. Then switch to the Commands tab and select the All Commands
option. The list you¹ll see is alphabetical, so look for Overtype.

Drag the command to your selected Toolbar. If you want to give it an icon,
right>click (or Cmd>click) on it and select Properties. Click on the arrow
to the left of the Name box and choose an icon. Then change the View button
to your preferred option. (Default style gives you the icon only.)

Open Word 2008.
Right Click on a blank area of the menu bar.
Customize tool bar and menu
All Commands
Commands
Overtype
Drag to the menu bar and place where you want it.
That’s not on the status bar but is in the menu bar at the top.

....And of course you can also assign a keyboard shortcut to it if you wish -
but beware one point: Not only has it been removed from the Status Bar, but
there is also *No Indicator* displayed when you have Overtype mode active.

I realize many people still rely on it, but it really is a throwback feature
which I discarded as soon as I began to realize how many ways there are to
precisely select text to be replaced. IMHO, "select & type" is far more
accurate & efficient. Toggling that monster on/off [or neglecting to do so]
used to drive me crazy:)

So, in other words, the 'Overtype Mode' check box under Preferences/Editing Options (that says it will place an OVR button on the status bar) does absolutely nothing?!

I think you're reaching...

The description text in that dialog doesn't say anything like "it will
place an OVR button on the status bar".

It says "You can also click OVR on the status bar to turn on or turn off
overtype mode".

Looks like that bit of description text was left there inadvertently.

The checkbox DOES turn Overtype mode on or off.

The overtype mode check box turns on overtype mode permanently, on my
machine.

The description doesn't say it will place an OVR button on the status
bar--it says that the OVR button is an alternate route to the same
function. Except the description has not been updated for 2008, it's
left over from 2004, so it's wrong.

Hello, I am searching for a solution to my problem. When I go to Preferences, Edit, the overtype mode checkbox is disabled or grayed out. What should I do?
