Overtype mode - why does it even exist??!

It is VERY annoying when Word shifts into overtype mode all on its own. I
NEVER want to be in overtype mode and I would like to be able to disable its
shifting into this mode on its own. Is this possible??

Hi -

Overtype mode is a 'throwback' fature that predates the use of the mouse on
the PC and is still used quite extensively & effectively by a great many
users. It can be a bit frustrating for those who don't use it regularly &
trigger it accidently... usually by inadvertently hitting the Insert key.
