does anyone know of a way to keep overtype mode off. (it
trives my nut when it starts that on it's own). i know how
to turn it off and on but i have no clue how to keep it
from turning on unless i want it too.

It doesn't turn on by itself. What usually happens is that you inadvertently
hit the Insert key when reaching for Delete or Backspace. On the Edit tab of
Tools | Options, you can choose to use the Insert key for Paste (which I
think would be even more disconcerting), or you can disable it altogether.
In the Tools | Customize dialog, press Keyboard... Select the All Commands
category and scroll to find Overtype. Select the Insert shortcut and click
Remove.
