overwrite project files on server

I 'm trying to introduce Project Server 2003 in my company, but I have the
following problem:
Project Managers have to be able to take their project file with them e.g.
on business trips and change the files offline.
But I can't overwrite an existing file on the server. I could save it with
another name and delete the old one, but then others that report their work
to this plan would notice it since they can't see the work they have allready
reported any longer(even though the work is saved in the project plan in the
actual work fields).

Is there any possibility to synchronize the file on the server with a newer
"offline file"? Maybe with using the server database?
By the way, is it possible to open the server database with ms Access? How?
And is it possible to edit the server database?

It would be really great if anyone could help me with this!!

It is possible to open the server database with Access (if you have
permissions), although I don't recommend it. The help available in Access
can get you started on connecting to external data sources.
