Overwriting a file

I want to know if I can find a previous version of a word
file. I've closed the file using the same filename and
lost a lot of work - I want to go back to the original
does anyone know if I can and how?

Hi, Jane,

If the option in Tools > Options > Save for "Always create backup copy" was
turned on before you saved the wrong version, you may find a file named
"Backup of xyz.wbk" in the same folder with the current version. This will
be the file as it existed before the save.

If this option wasn't turned on (and, since you're asking the question, I
assume you don't have a backup copy made some other way), the odds are
*very* slim. You can search the drive for files named *.tmp or ~*.doc, and
look at them in Notepad. Word is supposed to delete its temp files when you
exit the program, but sometimes they're orphaned. Most of them don't contain
anything useful, but you might find some chunks of text.
