OWC - Fatal installation error

B

Bothell John

I tried to install version 3 of the Office Web Components, but all I get is a
dialog box that says 'Fatal Installation Error'.

I have tried/ruled out:
Bad download - Downloaded file several times with no change.
Removed prior version of OWC to see if that caused conflict.
Firewall not causing problem - turned off firewall, checked firewall log
for entries
Turned off anti-virus software.
Turned off other start-up and utility programs.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm not aware of version 3 for OWC. Might you mean version 11? If you have
installation issues, you should run the depends utility that ships with
visual studio. Point it to the owc dll and it will show you what is bugging
the system. Normally, installations proceed without issue unless there are
permissions errors.

1) The download page for OWC says Version 3. I believe the real version would
be 11.3 since it works with Office 11.

2) I no longer have owc.dll on my system since I uninstalled the previous
installation. There shouldn't be any permission problems since I am
installing as administrator, and I don't have any office running (unless
there is something hiding in the list of running processes that I can't
recognize). Should I be able to find a copy of owc.dll on my system that is
left over from the failed install?

Thanks for the information,

Provide me the link. Owc.dll is version 9, you should be looking for owc10
or owc11. These versions are installed with office xp and/or 2003
respectively.
