OWC for Server Side Use

R

Rohan Salt

We have a number of applications that use OWC.11 to generate server side
charts from ASP classic and ASP.net. One of our clients is reluctant to
install OWC.11 because of KB article 317316 which indicates there are
problems with server stability, scalability etc with OWC. I believe this
article relates only to OWC 9(which is known to have problems) but does NOT
apply OWC 11. Beyond some code examples from “The code project†published
through the MSDN Site that use Server Side Charting, I can find no reference
at Microsoft to indicate OWC.11 is “safe†for Server Side use.

Can someone from Microsoft provide a response that I can pass on to my
client or a reference to article or white paper that may allay some of their
fears (I have looked for 3 or 4 hours and can’t find a single statement
beyond the first line in the last paragraph of KB 555075 which my client
dismissed with “oh that OWC XP not OWC 11 and its from the licensing people -
what do they know!â€)

Your clients are right. OWC is not recommended for server side, nor is it
supported server-side so if you run into problems with your hookup on the
server, MS support will simply tell you that this isn't supported and close
the case.
That said, server side charts do not usually pose a scalability problem for
several reasons that I don't care to delineate here.

Thanks for the clarification..

What I find interesting is that Sql Server 2005(Standard Edition) installs
owc11 on the server as part of the installation for the database engine. (ie
select database engine only, no reporting services or anything else and it
gets installed). So its not supported, causes problems and is an integral
part of the latest version of MS's flagship database offering

Kind of strange!

OWC in sql server 05 is used for the reporting services portion only. I'm
really not sure why it is getting installed.
