For Word for Macintosh documents to be opened easily on a PC it is important
to add the .doc extension. This can be added automatically when saving new
documents by checking the Append file extenion option found in the File -
Save As dialog box.

Hi
What setting do I need to change to allow P.C. users to open mac office
word documents I send to them? At the moment they can't open them
I thought so too, but am forced to use "MacLink" to translate them...and
then some older word programs have troubles.
You may also want to try sending attachments using the "Encode for Windows
(Base64.MIME; no compression; Windows file name extensions." Drop down the
"attachments" arrow in your composed message window and select it that way,
or you can change your preferences to do that by default. That is what I
use when I use Entourage. Mac users and Windows users can receive
attachments successfully that way.
In my experience, when I send the Mac way, Windows users get confused
because they see a resource fork as a file, and open it. Of course it
doesn't open. Sending this way sends the file without the resource fork.
