Package for CD

Hi,

I'm having a problem with text boxes in a PPS I need to distribute on CD.

Text boxes seem to lose their space formatting and the letters of words and
sometimes entire words end-up all on the same space. For example, the words
Microsoft PowerPoint might end-up looking like all of the 20 letters are in
just a single space. I can provide screen dumps of this if necessary.

The confusing part about this problem is that it appears to only happen when
the presentation is launched with PPT viewer. If I open PowerPoint first then
launch the presentation it works fine.

The other anomoly is that this problem only occurs on my desktop and the
exact same CD copy of the presentation displays fine on my laptop.

The final contradiction to rhyme and reason is that is occurs randomly so it
isn't even a case of re-editing selected text boxes on just a few pages. If
you exit and re-launch the presentation the problem occurs in different
words, sentences and slides.

I look forward to any suggestions.

Justin

It's either a display issue or a font issue. What font did you use in the
presentation? Try embedding it and see if that works any better.

Thanks for your reply. The font I used is Verdana because it should be on
most if not all PCs running Windows XP. However, I tried embedding it using
both the 'Options' setting in PowerPoint and the the 'Options' within the
Package for CD funstion. Neither helped!

As for the possibility of a display problem I don't htink this is the
problem either as the same file works fine on the problem PC if launched from
within PowerPoint application but errors when launched using the PPT Viewer.

Verdana shouldn't be a problem, you're right.

I'd try turning down hardware acceleration.

OK tried that not just one 'click' but also two and still no change when
viewing the presentation. I assumed that was all I had to do, try viewing it.
is this right or would that setting effect the way the file was saved onto

I would try playing the presentation (the version on the CD) in PowerPoint to
see whether it is specific to the Viewer or the presentation or the CD. Open

Hi Sonia,

Thanks for wading into this one to try to help sort it out. Unfortunately if
you read my original request for assistance I have actually tried that and
yes it works fine when launched using that method.

I also mentioned that this problem appears to only occur on some machines.
As mentioned, using either the viewer or the PPT application plays the CD
version fine on my laptop. But I have had clients suffer the same products
with other presentations I have prepared in the past so it's not just my
machine.

Its a curly one but it appears the viewer is incompatible with something on
my desktop. By the way, I downloaded the latest version of the viewer before
contacting you guys to see if that fixed the problem.... No luck!

Appreciate you assistance folks.

Can you extract a few of the slides, test to make sure that the problem exists
with them, and then send the file for testing on my system? If so, you can
email it to sonia @ soniacoleman . com (without the spaces).

Final outcome:

Having checked numerous things like graphics acceleration and display
settings, Sonia suggested I make sure the device drivers I was using for my
display on the problematic PC were absolutley up to date. I did this but the
problem persisted.

Sonia then suggested reducing the level of animation used in the
presentation so I started investigating that possibility. In the end it
turned out the problem was caused not by the level of animation used to build
the individual slides but by an animated gif I had embedded in the Slide
Master. Removing that and placing it only on a few slides throughout the
presentation eliminated the problem I was having.

Although it would have been better if we’d been able to specifically
identify what was causing it (settings, PC configuration, etc) to enable me
to use the gif as originally planned, I think we've spent enough time on it
for now. It appears to be something in the software/hardware configuration
of slightly older generation PCs but to identify hte cause exactly might be
impossible.

Thanks again for your help Sonia.

Thanks for getting back to us on this, Justin. Although I was not able to see
the problem on my systems, the problem you were having and the solution you've
come up with do confirm the cause of display problems on *some* systems. In
fact, the slides and text that you identified to me as displaying incorrectly
were loaded with custom animations some of which were set to run together (With
Previous). The text that displayed incorrectly in the examples I saw were
non-alpha characters and the animated GIF has 37 frames. Many of those frames
are set to display with zero timing. It all adds up to very demanding display
requirements.

Therefore, the capabilities of the video card and the resources on the system
will play a central role in the quality and accuracy of the display of all items
on the slides. Removing the animated GIF is a good solution because, at least
for my taste, the viewer's eye is now drawn to the "content" of each slide, not
to the repeated logo on each slide.

to use the gif as originally planned, I think we've spent enough time on it
for now. It appears to be something in the software/hardware configuration
of slightly older generation PCs but to identify hte cause exactly might be
impossible.

Thanks again for your help Sonia.

Can you extract a few of the slides, test to make sure that the problem
exists
with them, and then send the file for testing on my system? If so, you can
email it to sonia @ soniacoleman . com (without the spaces).

Hi Sonia,

Thanks for wading into this one to try to help sort it out. Unfortunately
if
you read my original request for assistance I have actually tried that
and
yes it works fine when launched using that method.

I also mentioned that this problem appears to only occur on some
machines.
As mentioned, using either the viewer or the PPT application plays the CD
version fine on my laptop. But I have had clients suffer the same
products
with other presentations I have prepared in the past so it's not just my
machine.

Its a curly one but it appears the viewer is incompatible with something
on
my desktop. By the way, I downloaded the latest version of the viewer
before
contacting you guys to see if that fixed the problem.... No luck!

Appreciate you assistance folks.

Regards,

J.

:

I would try playing the presentation (the version on the CD) in
PowerPoint to
see whether it is specific to the Viewer or the presentation or the CD.
Open
PowerPoint and then use File > Open to locate and open the CD version.

OK tried that not just one 'click' but also two and still no change
when
viewing the presentation. I assumed that was all I had to do, try
viewing
it.
is this right or would that setting effect the way the file was saved
onto
the CD? Anyway...what next?

THanks for your efforts.

Verdana shouldn't be a problem, you're right.

I'd try turning down hardware acceleration.

Thanks for your reply. The font I used is Verdana because it should
be
on
most if not all PCs running Windows XP. However, I tried embedding
it
using
both the 'Options' setting in PowerPoint and the the 'Options'
within
the
Package for CD funstion. Neither helped!

As for the possibility of a display problem I don't htink this is
the
problem either as the same file works fine on the problem PC if
launched
from
within PowerPoint application but errors when launched using the
PPT
Viewer.

It's either a display issue or a font issue. What font did you
use in
the
presentation? Try embedding it and see if that works any better.

Hi,

I'm having a problem with text boxes in a PPS I need to
distribute
on
CD.

Text boxes seem to lose their space formatting and the letters
of
words
and
sometimes entire words end-up all on the same space. For
example,
the
words
Microsoft PowerPoint might end-up looking like all of the 20
letters
are
in
just a single space. I can provide screen dumps of this if
necessary.

The confusing part about this problem is that it appears to
only
happen
when
the presentation is launched with PPT viewer. If I open
PowerPoint
first
then
launch the presentation it works fine.

The other anomoly is that this problem only occurs on my
desktop and
the
exact same CD copy of the presentation displays fine on my
laptop.

The final contradiction to rhyme and reason is that is occurs
randomly
so
it
isn't even a case of re-editing selected text boxes on just a
few
pages.
If
you exit and re-launch the presentation the problem occurs in
different
words, sentences and slides.

I look forward to any suggestions.

Regards,

Justin
