Page Break & Hide Markup

S

Sal Collora

Hi all,

I just converted over to Macintosh from PC, and two of my favorite Word
functions don't seem to work the way they did in the PC version. I cannot
do CTRL-ENTER to get a page break, and there doesn't seem to be a way to
hide markup. I use this function often on my projects when many people are
reviewing documents. I like to see the way the document would look with all
changes accepted and that function is great.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

...Sal

Hi Sal,

Page break is Shift+Enter. I can't find hide markup. Could it be called
something else? You can look for yourself by printing out a list of all the
Word keyboard shortcuts. Here's how:

In Word, go to Tools -> Macro -> Macros. In the dialog box that opens, look
for where it says ³Macros in:" Select the ³Word Commands² option from the
popup and then scroll down and select the command called ³ListCommands.²
Finally, click Run.

It may take a while but once the list comes up, you can print it out for
future reference. Hope this helps.

Hi Beth,
a gotcha and a bit more stuff -
Hi Sal,

Page break is Shift+Enter.
If you have a powerbook, there may be a complication. Some Powerbooks
have two enter keys. In Word, and some other programs, only one works
as 'enter' e.g. on a Pismo, to get a page break, you must type
fn-shift-return, they key marked enter is no good.
On a 12" PB that works too, as does control-enter (that 'enter' is the
key between the cmd and home to the right of the space bar marked with
a cirmumflex with a bar on top - picnic table? ;-) )
I can't find hide markup.
It depends what you mean. Cmd-8 is show/hide paragraph tabs and spacing
markup.
If you mean field contents - that is themes and variations on alt-f9.
Ever since Panther (Mac OS X 10.3.x) hijacked f9, I have not been back
to check. I have been dreading that. Sal, ask again, and I'll get
enough courage to find out how to toggle that f9 exposé toy.
If you mean just make it look pretty, with the spacing vaguely right
and the page breaks where they ought to be, that's simply View -> Page
view in the main menu.

By the way, Panther has made driving the main menu from the keyboard a
little better. You can now, for instance, type control-m to light the
menu bar, arrow across to view and type p to change to page view.
(Provided you have previously visited system preferences and enabled
full keyboard access and chosen the alphabetic option)

Does not save a lot of time, unless, like me, your mouse is buried
under piles of junk on your desk. I *hate* taking my paws off the
keyboard.

Don't know about toggling (expect it could be done via Applescript)
but I remapped Exposé to F13, using the System Preferences/Exposé
panel. Made All windows F13, App windows CMD-F13 and Desktop
Option-F13. Killed the Active Screen Corners, too, except Start
Screen Saver.

I think I've used Exposé twice intentionally in the last several
months., so I'm considering removing it entirely.

Sounds like a good plan. I'll try something similar, F13 is just off
the right hand side of the keyboard on this powerbook.

Yep, the novelty wears off pretty quickly.
