page break leads to chaos

I clicked at the top of page one of a document to make a page break and
create a new, earlier page one. Things then went downhill. I pasted text
onto the new page one, and needed to put address details for a letter at the
top. As I typed these details, the lower text suddenly shunted down and off
the page. I suspected that the page break was causing the problem, which
got just worse and worse. Pressing backspace or delete just brought odd
lines back up, and so on.

I transferred the document to a laptop and the problem went with it.

I thought there was setting where you could see the hidden formatting on the
page, but all I could find was paragraph signs and dots between letters.
How do you see page break indicators? I am using Word 97.

Use the menu, VIEW, NORMAL. A "hard" page break should be a single line
across the page versus a "soft" page break, which is a dotted line
across.

In order to see all non-printing characters, go to Tools | Options |
View | Formatting Marks and select all. If this does not help you,
please post back here and we'll try something else.
