Page Breaks are created before inserted Cross-References after F9

Most threads have not described the problem well:
1) You insert a cross-reference for a Caption (automatically thru a dialog
box)
2) No page breaks or returns are inserted manually. The cross-reference is
inline with the text: it has text before and after it. Example: "Review
Figure 1: Server Loads for a clear discussion on server loads". ("Figure 1:
Server Loads" is the cross reference).
3) Frequently when you Select ALL and then press F9 to update all fields,
WORD includes a page break before the Cross Reference.

Many threads go into Bookmarks. This problem does not include bookmarks at
all.

Why does WORD include page breaks on some and not all Caption Cross Refences?
How to get rid of this behavior?

Many thanks
Akram

The problem does involve bookmarks in that Word creates a bookmark around
the caption when you insert a cross-reference. If you later insert
*anything* that gets inside that bookmark (easier to do than you might
think), then it will be included in the cross-reference the next time you
update fields; see

Thanks Suzanne,
Now I know how to resolve the problem. The link was perfect.
One more question: why does my fumbling with the referenced text produce a
page break?
Thanks again

I'm not sure how a page break could be introduced inadvertently, so that
remains a mystery.

Pressing Ctrl+Enter by mistake instead of just Enter? Note that in Word
2007, if you are working in Draft view with nonprinting marks hidden, it
would look like you've just pressed Enter.
