Excel 2000 on Win 98 (9.0.6926 SP-3). I often put "header
boxes" at the top of a table. The boxes are simply a one-
row column merge over the width of the table (i.e. the
useful part of the worksheet). But the following occurs
just as well if the box is in the un-merged state, one
column wide.
The problem is this. At some point, simply clicking in the
box will trigger a page fault crash. The crash cannot be
recovered from with standard means. Excel refuses to open
the files it had open at crash time. TaskInfo informs me
there is still a running instance of Excel.exe, which does
not appear in Task Manager. If I terminate that instance,
then I can re-open as before, and enjoy a new crash on the
next click on the cell.
This is not directly linked to cell contents. If I do some
modifications (work) elsewhere in the workbook, then I get
to do some work on the header box, before I reach the
crash limit again. It's as if I had to keep a balance
between operations on the box and operations elsewhere, as
long as I'm "in the black", no crash. "In the red", and
crash can be repeated any number of times.
