Page # Field nameprints not the #

On a system that has een running fo years under the same user, Word 97
has thrown us a wobbly.

Entering the page number from the # button in the footer toolbar,
displays the field/macro name. Toggle it and one sees the number.
But print it and it prints the field/macro name, regardless of the toggle!

Has anyone an idea as to ho to cure this?

To hide field codes from display and print: On the Tools menu, click
Options. Make sure that the check box next to "Field codes" is cleared
on the View tab as well as the Print tab, and then click OK.
