page formatting

Can someone help me in formatting page numbering in a long
document. I want the first page number of the document to
enter in the footer of the document and centered. The rest
of the page numbering should be right hand cornered on the
header. I tried different options to change the page
numbering with Microsoft help. Every time I moved the page
numbering the first page number also moved to the upper
right hand corner. This is not something I had expected.

I greatly appreciate your suggestions and help.

First of all, don't try to do this through Insert | Page Numbers. Though a
handy tool, it will not do what you want. Here's how to do it instead:

1. View | Header and Footer. This puts you in the header pane with the
Header and Footer toolbar displayed.

2. Assuming you want only a page number in the header (no other text), press
Ctrl+R to right-align the header paragraph (if you want to include other
text, the default Header style includes center and right tab stops to help
you place text and page numbers).

3. Click on the # (Insert Page Number) button on the Header and Footer
toolbar to insert the page number at the right side of the header.

4. On the H&F toolbar, click the Page Setup button, which opens the Page
Setup dialog at the Layout tab.

5. In the dialog, check the box for "Different first page," then click OK.
This will give you separate First Page Header/Footer and Header/Footer.

6. If you are on the first page of the document, you will now see "First
Page Header" at the top of the header pane, and the header will be empty. If
you see "Header" and your page number, click the Show Previous button on the
H&F toolbar to get to the First Page Header.

7. Click the Switch Between Header and Footer button to get to the First
Page Footer.

8. Assuming you want no other text besides the page number in the footer,
press Ctrl+E to center the paragraph (if you want other text, you can use
the center tab to position your page number).

9. Click the # button to insert your page number.

10. Click Close to close the footer pane.

I need some help with page number formatting as well. I followed th
instructions given by Suzanne, but I have had some difficulty.

I need my page numbers to start as page number 1 on what is actuall
the fourth page of the document. When I follow the directions, my pag
numbers start on the actual first page of the document (where I do no
want a page number) and continues throughout the entire documnet. Also
the page number shows as "1" throughout every page... HELP! Th
document is about 90 pages long, but I only want page numbers on th
content pages of the document (i.e., real page 4 should be page #1 an
continue through about page 80 of the document).

Hope this makes sense. I am on Word 97. My thesis deadling i
approaching and I can't seem to make this work. Your help is muc
appreciated
