Page number appendix

I am working in Word 2004 for Mac and I am trying to page number a
stand-alone Appendix A-1, A-2, A-3, etc. in the footers. There are no
section breaks because this is a separate file from the master doc.

Problem is: I can't seem to do this without it giving me this error
message about the bullets and numbering. I do not understand how--or
even why--there should be some mysterious heading style applied to
this. Please help me figure out what steps I need to take to do this
(seemingly) simple task...

What's the error message? How have you been trying to do this?

If the appendix is stand-alone and you don't need Word to generate a proper
TOC for it or anything, you should be able to View | Header/Footer, type the
"A-" and then click the # icon to insert the page number after the A-.

Don't use Insert | Page Number and check the "chapter number" box. Word
doesn't know what the chapter number is unless you set up bullets and
numbering.

When you View | Headers/Footers, delete all page numbers that you may have
inserted before, *and* delete the grey box around the page numbers--that is
a frame and can cause issues later.

Thanks Daiya, I can do that. I guess I have been staring at this stuff
