page number changed after referesh functional variable of index

I am using Microsoft WORD (any version is the same
to write a book
My files contain

Chapter1.do
Chapter2.do
....
Index.do

The starting page number of each chapter is input by hand after th
endin
page number of the previous chapter

In each chapter I created functional variable XE.... for index
At the very beginning of the last file index.doc I use function variabl
RD[....] to include all of the previous chapters
Thus I created an index for the whole book
The page number of index.doc is put by hand in the same way as th
previou
chapters

What bothers me is every time when I update the function variable of th
index, the starting page of the Index.doc is reset to start from
instead o
my previous set number

What is wrong with my usage? Thanks

Since you are using RD fields, you may find the following article helpful:

To clarify, the article does discuss both TOCs and indexes.

I have read this article before I asked the question
It proposed to use macros

However, it did NOT answered my question

My question is
Why did my page number in the index.doc changed

My index.do
use RD only for chap1.doc, chap2.doc....chap10.do
which did not include the cover.doc and the index.doc
Therefore, there should have no problem of self-referencing

Indeed, I suggested the article because it keeps track of the page numbering.
You didn't say that you had looked at it and discarded it previously.

In the included document, did you remember to set the starting number in the
Page Number Format dialog box?

Yes, as I I said, I had set the starting number.
I have edited this set of files for my book for over 10 years.
What I said had repeated happened for more than 10 years.
