page number in footer

windows xp pro, ms word 2000
the document is divided into 12 sections. sec 1 does not have page
number, sec 2 has page number centred in footer, sec 3-12 have page
number on right in footer. the problem is that if i set the display of
the page number in sec 2 as centred in footer, sec 8 changes as well,
and vice versa (sec 3 does not). it seems that sec 2 and sec 8 are
related to each other while other sections do not. how to solve it?

sec 4-12 footers are *same as previous* but sec 3 is not.

Did you use Insert | Page Numbers to insert the page numbers or were they
inserted using the Insert Page Number button on the Header and Footer
toolbar?

problem partly solved, it was because selected "page setup - layout -
different first page". dont want to show the header on the first page of
each section. if deselect the option, no more problem with the footer,
but cant control the header on the first page of each section. any
suggestions? thank you very much.

If you don't want a header on the first page of each section, then you need
to enable "Different first page" and leave all the First Page Headers empty.
