Page Number in Page Layout Mode

I am using Office X on a Mac and have noticed that all of a sudden my
page numbers do not display correctly in Layout Mode. Instead of the
page number, I get {page} . Does anyone know why this is?

you typed option-f9
type it again to fix it

option-f9 is the shortcut for the command called 'field codes'
It toggles showing the field or the result of interpreting the field.

You can fruitfully spend many an idle hour rummaging in the help and
trying things out. EQ (equation) fields are particularly satisfying.
Anything that gets rid of that brain-damaged equation editor has to be
a good thing.
