page number in the Table of Contents - hyperlink does not work

Hi, when I used Word 97 I could click on a page number in the Table of
Contents and go to that page in the document.
However, since going to Word 2002 this function does not work. Any ideas how
to rectify this please.
I have looked in the Help and on the internet but with no luck.
