Page number missing on page 2

I'm using Word X for Mac. I choose Insert>Page Numbers, and the page number
shows up in Page View on all pages of the document except Page 2. If I View
the footer on page 2, the page number is there, but when I close the footer
the page number disappears again. It doesn't print, either.

I've also tried manually typing the page number in the footer, but none of
the text I type shows up in the footer after I close the footer.

The most likely answer is that something on page 2 is pushing the text so
close to the edge of the page that your printer refuses to print it. Hit ¶
on the standard toolbar so that you can see what is going on.

What's the rest of your doc like? Sections, etc? It's a bit odd for such a
thing to only happen on page 2.

Thanks for the reply. It's not just that the printer doesn't print it. It
also doesn't appear in page layout view on the screen. My margin is 1 inch,
so I'm still trying to figure this out.

Any further help is most welcome.

What's the "from edge" setting for the footer? (Format | Document, Margins)

Is there anything in your doc that would make page 2 different?

Did you hit the ¶ button so you can see what's really going on and what else
might be in the footer?

Till Daiya comes back:

Change to Normal view.

Do you see any section breaks?

* A SUGGESTION ‹ WAIT FOR CONSIDERED ADVICE: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is proposed; sometimes you'll be asked for further information so that a
better answer can be provided. Good tips about getting the best out of
posting are at http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari
and it gives you a blank page the first time, you may need to hit the
circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current page" -- a few times).

The "from edge" setting for all the footers/headers in the document is zero.

Somehow, after playing around with text in the header for a while, the page
number now shows up. It's a mystery why it's working now.

If the problem recurs, I'll post back here and re-read your responses. (This
has happened to me several times in different documents, so it's bound to
recur sooner or later.)

I appreciate all your help.

Well, zero is too small. That means the margin for the footer is right up
on the edge of the paper, and most printers can't print there.

..5 in is a good from edge setting--that's .5 of blank space from the edge of
the paper.
