Page number position in multi-section documents

I am trying to format page numbers in the running footer section of my
post-grad thesis (in Word 2003) which has approximately 20 different sections
in 380 pages, due to the necessity of having about 20 or more landscape
layout pages randomly located within different chapters. Apart from the
opening pages for three indexed TOC lists (contents, list of figures, list of
tables), numbered in lower case Roman numerals, I want the rest of my
document (which appears as single pages, i.e., not to be printed as duplex)
to have consecutively numbered pages from 1 to 380. My footer also includes
other information (left justified and in a different font to page number)
that also appears on every page of the document.

I have two or three concerns or problems:

1: getting the page number (positioned on bottom RHS) to stay within the
boundaries of my footer, i.e., immediately left of, but inside the RHS
framework of footer;

2: getting the page number to appear on the bottom RHS of landscape pages,
in the same position as on portrait pages;

3: maintaining the same format from one section to the next, where Section
breaks go from landscape to portrait and then back to landscape etc.;

Further background:

Because my document page lengths are variable (due to insertion of
photographs as Figures and/ or Tables in text pages), in order to prevent the
bottom line of my document body text appearing too close (almost immediately
on top of my footer text), I have created a line space within the footer and
have a line border running beneath the footer text. (I would have preferred
to have this line to be located above my footer text.) Inserting the page
number into the footer (right justified), it appears at the top RHS of the
footer box... a line position above my other footer text. If I try to move
the page number on to the same (second) line as my footer text, then the page
number "disappears" from other preceeding or succeeding pages!

If I simply insert page numbers into the document (i.e., not from within
footer view), then use of TAB to shift the page number to the RHS results in
page number appearing outside the footer box.

If I insert page number into document via the footer, then page number only
appears 2/3 away across the page on landscape pages.

Hope someone can help...
Cheers,
harvestman

To continue page numbering from one section to the next, make sure
that the "Continue from previous section" option is selected in the
Page Number Format dialog box. For details, see:

To get the page numbers where you want them on landscape pages, see:

Stefan:

Thank you for your quick reply and the url sites. I shall check these sites
now. When I am in header/ footer view, I note that most of the headers and
footers state: "Continue from previous section", but maybe some don't, so I
shall check each section again.

I think my main problem relates to having created this extra line space in
first line of my footer above my footer text. By default word places the
right justified page number on top RHS and when I select the "move frame"
option to re-position the page number on the next line down, that action
deletes the page numbers from previous and succeeding sections.

Cheers,

Don't forget to unlink sections (by clicking the "Same as
previous"/"Link to previous" button on the Header/Footer toolbar);
that way, you can position the page number in a section without
affecting other sections.

Don't even think about using framed page numbers except when absolutely
necessary. That is, don't use Insert | Page Numbers. Instead, put the page
number directly in the header/footer using the Insert Page Number button on
the Header and Footer toolbar. It will be much easier to edit your page
numbers and their position in the header/footer if you do it this way.
