Page number problem

A document opened on my college's computer displays wrong page numbering. On his computer the header shows "page 0 of 1", "page 0 of 2" etc throughout the complete document. I have tried to update the fields, but the page numbers continue to show page 0, and I can not find any way to update the page numbers. This causes also the page reference in the table of content to also show only zeros...
The same document is correctly opened on my computer.
As a experienced Word user I have never seen this before, and I do appreciate a quick replay to this problem.
The user have XP version of both Office and Windows.
