I've got a ~400 page doc, just over 4 megs (horrors, I know. I'd rather
be using Ventura!) with extensive xrefs and TOC entries. It started as a
massive RTF file generated by a help file decompiler, now a Word doc
that has been extensively reordered. The page numbering of the 4th
section is supposed to restart with numeral "1", while the preceding
sections (front matter) are numbered with roman numerals.
Strangely, when I select the entire document and hit F9 to update all
the xrefs, TOC, Index, Word insists on resetting the page numbering of
section 4 to continue from previous, and it resets to "21".
I've disconnected the footers of each section from the preceding, tried
resetting the page number at each section to start at a specific number
(the first 3 sections *could* continue the page numbering from the
previous section). I'm using Insert, Page Numbers, Format to reset the
numbering, as usual. Nothing seems to stop this peculiar (buggy) reset
of the numbering at section 4. Additionally, Insert Page numbers behaves
badly, and insists on inserting the number in a stupid text frame and
mucking with my footer formatting, instead of simply adjusting the
number of my existing inserted page number (not in a frame).
The first para of the section is tagged with a style that calls for a
page break before, and it was preceded by a section break (next page). I
tried overriding the style, removing the PB before. I also tried
converting the break between sections 2 and 3 to a simple page break, so
that the problem section is now section 3. No change. The page number
setting still resets to "continue from previous" after an update of all
fields.
Now, it *looks* like the xrefs and TOC (and hopefully the index, though
I haven't looked) are correct after I reset the numbering back to "1"
after the update, but can I rely on this? Any suggestions as to how to
fix this problem? I do have all patches applied.
Thanks,
Abe
