Page Number Sequence Change

I have an eight page document and want the first five pages to be
numbered i, ii, iii, iv, v and the sixth page to be numbered 1, the
seventh page 2 and the eighth page to have no number. I have
succeeded in numbering the first five pages, but each time I insert or
change the number on either the sixth or seventh page the same number
(1,1,1 or 2,2,2) ends up on all three pages. I have inserted a Break
(continuous), which doesn't solve the problem. How can I number the
sixth page 1 and the seventh page 2 and leave the eight page
unnumbered?

Try using a "Next Page" Section Break after pages 5 and 7.
Then, make sure you "unlink" the [headers and] footers from
each section, then "insert" page numbers into each section.
Page "6" should start at 1 (page 7 will then follow on), then remove
the page number from "page 8".

That didn't do it. It added pages (as expected) and put page numbers
3 and 4 (including on a blank page) but not numbers 1 and 2. The
other blank page created is numbered vi. By "unlink" I assume you
mean use "Start at" rather than "Continue from the previous section"
