Page Numbering & Bookmarks

Im a vb programmer who now has to compile the user manual using MS Word. I
want to get started on the right track so I want to ask a couple of
questions before I start.
The manual will be a loose bound manual broken into 15 sections. I want
each of these sections pages numbered seperately ie
Section 1 numbering will be in format 1.1, 1.2, 1.3
Section 2 numbering will be in format 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 etc

and so on.

The manual will be used as both an online manual, and a printed document.
For the online users, I want to be able to refer to a paragraph in one
section from another section and allow the user to click a link to take them
to the section. For printed manual users, I would like to be able to refer
to the page number that the paragraph is on. ie In section 6 page 3, I want
to have something like ...(see page 2.3). The page number that is printed
must be dynamic, so that I dont have to re-type this page numbers as
document size/layout changes.

Im sure this must be a common request but I can't easily understand the help
& have not found much usefull help anywhere else.

Could someone please point me in the direction of either a useful word
template or some easy to follow help on this subject.

This document will be very much easier to manage if you keep it in a single
file. For your page numbering, the minimum requirement will be that you have
an autonumbered paragraph somewhere in each section to provide the section
number; see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ChapterNumber.htm. For the
cross-references, you insert a bookmark on the page you want to refer to (if
you have autonumbered paragraphs, they are already bookmarked), then use
Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to Bookmark: Page number. If you leave
the "Insert as hyperlink" box checked (as it is by default), your
cross-reference will also be a hyperlink.
