Hi Chetan
You are wise indeed to suggest creating a template *for this purpose*.
By default, all Word documents are based on the normal.dot template. You
could modify normal.dot to include your page numbers. But that would not
be wise at all. The reason is that, once you've put anything into a
header or footer, you can't delete the header or footer. You can delete
the contents of the header or footer, but not the header or footer
itself. That can be a real pain when trying to create, say, labels with
very tiny page margins.
So, to create a template with page numbers, you can do this. File > New.
In Word 2002 or 20003, in the New Document task pane, click "On my
computer...". In the subsequent dialog box, click the Template radio
button, and then OK.
You are now editing a template, not a document. The bar at the top of
the window will say Template1. Insert your page numbers in the usual
way. Save your template in the folder that Word proffers you.
Now, to create a document using your template, click File > New. In Word
2002 or 2003, click "On my computer...". Click your template and click
OK. You're now editing a document, based on your template. That document
will include the page numbering you created in the template.
