Page numbering continues from previous when update index

I have a 100-page document. Between the front matter and the main document
is an odd page break. The front matter page numbers appear in roman
numerals. The rest in regular numbers. The first page of the main section
footer is not set to "Same as Previous". I changed the page number on the
first page of the main body to "Start at 1" But when I update the index, it
reverts back to "Continue from Previous" and goes from starting at page 1 to
page 11. It continues from previous, and in regular numbers - not roman. Any
idea how to make the "Start at 1" setting stick?

Thanks.

Hi:

Sounds like you have the TOC too close to that Section Break and it is
"eating" it each time the TOC updates.

Try making sure you have a paragraph that is NOT part of the TOC immediately
before the section break.

On the other hand, if you really do mean "Index", and you have set the Index
into double columns, you will get a second section break inserted by the
Index.

Make sure you are in Normal View with your Show/Hide turned on so that you
can see what you are doing. Of course, you do remember that a section break
FOLLOWS the text it controls? So you need to click AFTER the front matter
section break before changing your page number style.

Incidentally, "same as previous" has nothing to do with the format of the
page number -- that's a Section property set by the Insert>Page Number tool,
not by the Header/Footer tool.

Hope this helps
