Page numbering, different first page

Folks,

I want to make a doc start with a cover page that has no footer.
Odd/even footers should start on the second page and number ii, iii,
etc. The body of the doc starts on the seventh page where page numbers
start after a section break running 1, 2, 3, etc. I haven't figured out
the right combination of options to make this work.

The closest I've gotten is to disable "Different First Page" in Page
Setup and insert the page number on the first page with "Show number on
first page" disabled. The cover has no page # but that still leaves me
with other unwanted footer information on the cover page. Setting Page
Setup to Different First Page always makes the page # on the cover page
visible. How do I do it? Word 2003, Win XP.

TIA,
Ron

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm. Note that
if you don't want a page number on the first page, then don't insert a PAGE
field in the First Page Footer of Section 1; unlink Section 2 from Section 1
and insert the desired footer information there. You can disable "Different
first page" for Section 2 if it's not needed; if you leave it enabled,
you'll need to duplicate the Footer data in the First Page Footer. Note that
in this case you can leave the Footers in the two sections linked (you can
change page number format without unlinking), but you'll need to unlink the
two First Page Footers in order to have a page number and other data in one
and leave the other blank.

Suzanne,

Between the time I posted and the time you responded, I found that great
MVPS web site, as well as http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/index.html.
Took me a bit just to figure out what the sources meant by "unlink";
nothing in Word Help about it. Pretty nonintuitive, but I'm getting used
to that.

This is the kind of thing that makes me wish I could do all my work in
FrameMaker. Thanks for the response!
