Page numbering displays wrong

Hello,

Whenever I click to add auto-numbering in Word 2000, what is displayed is

{PAGE }

with a gray background, instead of the actual page numbers.

The document prints and previews the page numbers correctly, I just can't see them
while working on the document.

This happened only recently, I believe, while copying and pasting text and graphics
from a Power-Point web page. But I can't seem to find an option to restore it back.

Anyone have a clue?
