Page numbering gone wild

I have a documet in Word 2000 whose numbering system has gone wild. When I
open it and go to any page of the5 page document the place on the bottom of
the screen where it tells you what page---section and then page/amount of
pages in the document. The amount of pages does not stop adding up. If I
leave it alone it will go into the multi thousands. How do I get this to
stop? If I work on the document it will add pages forever. I have tried
copying the document and pasting it into another document but the new one
does the same thing.
I know something is corrupt but how do I stop it? I have had this document
around for a long time and just edit it each month (newsletter). It never did
this before. I hope someone knows what isgoing on and how to correct it.

As you suspect, eternal pagination is a sign of corruption.

The first way to check for a corrupt document is to
copy the entire thing, *excluding* the last paragraph mark, into a new
document. That last paragraph mark holds a lot of information which can get
corrupted, and copying the text into a document with a fresh one keeps your
formatting, but can fix some glitches.

A paragraph mark is a ¶. Click on ¶ on the standard toolbar to show
nonprinting characters, including paragraph marks.

More corruption fixes listed here, if that one doesn't work:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU- DAIYA!!!
I have been trying to get a fix for this through Microsoft and have spent
HOURS trying to find the place to get an answer. You were RIGHT and it
worked. I know this is routine for you but it has helped me ENORMOUSLY. Now I
know where to go for answers. Keep up the good work!!!!
