Page numbering - how to get un-numbered pages at beginning

I want to create a document that has some un-numbered pages at the
beginning, then some pages with roman numbers and then the rest with arabic
numbers. But I can't supress the display of the numbers on the pages that I
want un-numbered.


Background: I'm assembling a number of separate Word docs (sections/chapters
of a book) into a single document to produce a PDF to send to a printer. I'm
assembling the docs by means of Insert | File, positioning the cursor at the
end of one section before inserting the next.


What I'm doing: Having assembled the book, I insert a Section Break (Next
Page) at the end of the section that I want un-numbered and another at the
end of the section with the roman numerals. In the roman-numbered section, I
insert a page number in the footer (using Format to start numbering at 1 and
set style to roman), having cleared "Same as previous". Similarly in the
arabic-numbered section, I set the page number options to 1 and arabic. This
works fine... but the un-numbered section at the beginning has the page
numbers displayed.

If I try deleting the page number for the un-numbered pages, it deletes it
everywhere. So what's the solution?

With the cursor in the roman numbers section, view headers/footers. On the
toolbar, toggle off the icon for Same as Previous or Link to Previous. This
will break the connection between the first two sections. Then you can
delete the numbers in the un-numbered section.
