page numbering in footer

john

I am formatting a Word XP document, using headers and
footers, with the page numbering in the footer.

The page numbering begins on the first page with "page 1
of 8" no matter how many pages follow. It then
continues "Page 0 of 20" (for example - where there are
twenty pages in total) on every subsequent page.

Is there a way to format this so it appears correctly?

It would appear that you might have "Different first page" selected, so make
sure that the 8 in the First Page Footer is actually a NumPages field and
not just the number 8. Press Alt+F9 to toggle field codes. If you still see
8, then that's the problem. As for the 0, see

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately however, I am
still unable to solve the problem. Is it possible that
this may be a bug?

Hi John

The 'page 0' is a bug, as explained in the the referenced article. The 'of
8' might conceivably be caused by that, but more likely is the result of the
wrong field being in place, or the field being locked.

If you have followed the workaround and fixed the page 0 but still have the
'1 of 8' problem, I would remove the '8' in the first footer and reinsert
the total number of pages field from the header and footer toolbar (or copy
the working one from the later footers to the first).
