Page Numbering in Word 2007

This was easy to do in Office 2003 but I cannot figure it out in 07. I click on the header and then the number icon but whatever number I type in stays there on every page. Help wants me to do some add-in, but they are all disabled and there isn't any to add.

How do I just insert the number 4 in the footer so that the next page is 5?

Use Ctrl+F9 and type page between the { } so that you have { page } Use
Alt+F9 to toggle off the display of field codes.

I'm not following what steps you're performing...

How about going to the Insert tab, then clicking the "Page Number" button in the Header & Footer group?
