Page Numbering & Index Font Background dark grey, can't change it

For some reason the page numbers and the index font background has
changed to grey and I can't see why, or anyway to change it.

I installed word on the other system and it's normal on there. What
have I done and how can I fix it ?

You probably have Field Shading selected. This identifies Word fields
with a grey background.

To change the setting (In W2K at least) use:

Tools/Options View Tab

Field Shading is probably set to always. Change it to either Never or
When Selected
