Page numbering off due to columns

I just inserted two columns into a document (in order for a couple of long
lists not to make the document so long), and suddenly my pagination is off.
My first column starts on page 12, and by the time it goes over to the next
page, I'm on page 2. Same with the 2nd column set, it's starts over again,
too. So basically, my columns think I want to start numbering again. How to
stop this?

It sounds as if you have the numbering set to start at 1 in some previous
section instead of running continuously. When you create multiple columns,
Word inserts two section breaks, so the page after your columns is page 2 of
a new section. Click the Format Page Number button on the Header and Footer
toolbar and change the numbering to "Continue from previous section."

Suzanne, that helped me in one instance, but I guess I don't really
understand where these settings live and where I need to change them. I've
managed to fix this problem in one place, but for the life of me, I can't
find the second occurrence of the "Start at 1". I've got to each page and
inspected the setting. I must not be searching granularly enough. What am I
missing?

If you have a multi-column section in the middle of a page, then that is
probably where the problem is. The only way to access the page numbering for
this section (unless you insert a temporary page break to create a header or
footer for the section) is through Insert | Page Numbers... | Format.
