Can anyone tell me how to have consistent numbering
throughout a document that is divided in sections? I've
tried everything in Word help with no luck.

thanks!

We'll need a little more information than that.
I accomplish consistent numbering all the time, so how do I know what you're
doing wrong if you don't tell us what's happening? :)

Do the following to make sure that the page number format and restart
option is set to what you want:

Place the insertion point in the first section of the document. On the
Insert menu, click Page Numbers. In the Page Numbers dialog box, click
Format. Select the desired "Number format". Also, make sure that
"Continue from previous section" is selected, if that is what you
want. If you don't want continuous page numbering, you have to specify
a starting number instead. When you are done, click OK. Finally, click
Close (do *not* click OK) to close the Page Numbers dialog box.

Repeat the above procedure for each section the document.

Does this fix the problem?

Better to use the Format Page Numbers button on the Headers and Footers
toolbar. No way to click OK OK then.
