Page numbering problem

Hi,

I've set up a doc template with page numbers in the footer. It
contains:
*a front page as section 1 (containing no page numbering),
*a section for doc control info and the table of contents (numbered
with roman numerals e.g. page i of iv).
*Then follows the body of the document that I want numbered 'page 1 of
20' (assuming 20 pages of content - i.e. NOT including the cover page
and the pages containing doc control info).

This works fine using the standard tools, however it breaks once I add
additional sections. For example if I want one of the content pages
to be in landscape format I need to add a new section, but I want the
numbering to be continuous. In this example I can continue the page
numbering but the total number of pages can only be set to count
either the number of pages per section or the number of pages in the
entire doc.

Heres the question: is it possible to get word to automatically count
the number of content pages (regardless of how many sections are used)
without including the cover page and the control info pages in the
page count?

I hope this is clear and someone can answer as its driving me mad!

Thanks

You'll need a workaround for this. Instead of using either the NUMPAGES or
the SECTIONPAGES field for the Y of your Page X of Y, insert a bookmark on
the last page of the document and use a cross-reference to the page number
of that bookmark.

....alternatively, could you bookmark a field calculating the page count for
the first sections of the document and then use a calculated field which just
subtracts this from the total NUMPAGES? I think I've used this approach
successfully in the past.

Yes, if the number of pages is known. The bookmark approach will work even
if the number of pages of front matter changes.

Thank you. That helped me too .. was having the same problem. I hope they
fix this soon. It's been a problem for a while. Do you know if MS knows
about this one?

I think you must be having a different "problem." There is nothing to "fix"
in the OP's case. Word offers two fields: NumPages and SectionPages. When
neither one will provide the number desired, a workaround is necessary. I'm
not sure what you think MS should know about.
