page numbering question

John

I've got a 12 page doc with .75 inch margins all around and a footnote on pg
11. and I need to number pp 2-12. How would I do this without messing up the
formatting? I can't make it any longer in that the doc has to be 12 pages or
fewer and I'm already at the bottom of the 12th page and I don't want to
remove any text.

Thank you,

John

What version Word? In 2003 and earlier -- go to View HEADER / FOOTER...
switch to footer and place the page number where you want it.

Once you are happy with the postition -- click CLOSE on the Header/Footer
Toolbar and you will be returned to your document. Then go to the Page
Setup Dialog Box (File -- Page Setup) and go to the Layout Tab and place a
check in DIFFERENT FIRST PAGE. That will eliminate the page # on page 1.

Now if your page number has caused your document to add an additional
page... you have a couple of options.

1) reduce the font size of your page number (that may or may not help)
2) reduce the size of the font of the "normal" text in your document ( you
can even type in 11.5 which is practically negligible to the human eye --
but might make enough difference to pull your pages back in.)
3) decrease the page margins... either top or bottom... or pull the sides
in to .7 from .75

I hope this helps.
