page numbering - should be easy

I have a document where I've inserted "page x of y" into
the footer. There are several sections where I've told
the page numbers to continue after "starting" at section
3.

The "last" page reads Page 97 of 106. How do I stop the y
value of 106 from including the first couple of sections.

By the way, Page 1 starts at the beginning of Section 3
and "continues" across the remaining sections.

I hope I've explained this right. I really need to get
this working soon. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Instead of using the NumPages field for your Y, insert a bookmark on the
last page (currently page 97) and insert a cross-reference to the page
number of that bookmark.

Suzanne, that's certainly thinking outside of the box. I think it'll work.
I would have never thought of that one, and I've come up with some strange
workarounds. I'll give it a try.

This is an *old* trick, which I'm told dates from a time before there was a
NumPages field.

My goodness, Suzanne ... here's a mystery for you.
As you suggested, I put in the reference and it worked
throughout the document.

Now ... ready for this. I pdf'd the file and you'll never
believe what showed up where I put that field. Page 1 of
1, page 2 of 2, page 3 of 3, page 4 of 4 ... well, I
think you see the trend. It's wild! What the h....
happened!. This is going to drive me to drin...

If you, or someone else has seen this and has a fix,
please let me know.

PS ... I'm using Word XP (2002)
I did a print preview (after visiting your web page that
discusses this problem). In a print preview, the page
numbering is different again. Here's how the 97-page
document views: Page 1 of 2, page 2 of 3, page 3 of 4 ...
this is even different than how it shows in PDF (which I
printed to). I can't use the PDF integration tool,
because I get memory errors (probably due to the TOC).

Well Suzanne,
Although your site says that the fixes won't work on Word
verions past 2000, I tried the easiest trick of using
print preview ... but had to do it a few times, before the
numbering showed up correctly, but that did work on my XP
version. I re-pdf'd the file and the pages are find with
the reference used to show the total number of pages. Go
figure!
I'm glad I tried it.

I guess the lesson from this is that persistence pays off! But I don't think
the message of the FAQ is meant to be that the fixed don't work on versions
past 2000 but that they are not (or should not be) needed.
