Page numbering & slow response time

I have a Word 2000 document which is approx 700 kb in
size. The entire document is 1 table with one header and
footer (same for whole doc) and has one diagram inserted -
jpeg format. I am experiencing a few different problems
which could be related??.
1.The document has an incredibly slow response time - I
have removed all the styles and copied it into a new
document - saved it with a new name and still experience
the problem
2.Included in the header is 'Page X of Y' - Word does not
seem to recognise how many pages the document has - the
fields keep changing and also the total number of pages as
displayed on the status bar. Also - the page numbr on the
status bar seems to change all the time and does not
always match the page number field in the header. i.e. If
I go to the last page, which shows on the status bar and
in the page number field as page 106 and I print the page,
it will print that page with the field showing as Page 118
and update the field to page 118 even tho the document has
actually only got 106 pages and the status bar still shows
106 page.
