Page Numbering using Pageref

There was a known bug (Page X of Y) where the numpages field would read fine
but upon printing come out as 'page X of X' instead of 'page X of Y'. One of
the workarounds was to use Pageref instead of numpages.
We have upgraded to Word2003 SP1 and have always used the Pageref method.
Some of us now get the Page X of Y bug using Pageref. Printing in reverse
order (also a suggested workaround for numpages) seems to help.
Any ideas?

Yes, I am, thanks. That dealt with the Numpages problem and offered Pageref
as a workaround. I found that the Pageref workaround suffers from the same
problem and have not found that referred to anywhere.

I think this is the first we've heard of it. I'll escalate the issue.

Sorry Michael: I missed that!

I've little else I can add to this. I certainly experienced the problem in
Off 2000, but since moving on, I have not experienced it since. Several
users have reported this recurring in Off 2003, but I just haven't seen it.
It makes me wonder if it isn't printer dependent too.

Terry,
No problem--thanks for your interest.
It happened to me on different printers (reinstalling the driver for one of
them had no effect), as well as on a pdf after printing to Adobe Distiller
(where the page numbers come out X of X, even on-screen). This has happened
to others around here, but not to everyone. We tried the simple stuff
first--comparing settings--but that got us nowhere.

That's interesting in that it is an inconsistent 'bug'. Just to make sure
that it isn't some external influence, try testing a problem machine by
starting in Safe Mode. From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. That starts Word bypassing all addins, custom templates,
etc. Test and see if the X of X bug is still present.
