Page numbering

R

Rosemary

Hi. Can anyone help me with this one? I need the page
numbers to be at the bottom left in several documents. I
cannot get this to happen in some of them - even though I
make the correct choices in the Insert - page numbers
menus, the numbers always end up on the right. Something
is over-riding the page number instruction.

Has anyone any idea how to fix this?

Many thanks.

Rosemary,

Try displaying the header and footer toolbar, switch to and put your cursor
in the footer, hit CTRL+F9 and type PAGE between the curly brackets. Left
click and toggle field codes.

Many thanks - it works just fine. What if I have the
reverse problem (i.e. the page nos. appear on the left not
the right) - could you tell me how to modify your solution
so it deals with that one also?

Again, many thanks.

Same basic solution, but there's a much easier way. To begin with, don't use
Insert | Page Numbers unless you're doing a very simple document and need to
have page numbers (only--no header/footer text) Inside or Outside (in which
case that solution is simpler than using the header/footer).

Instead, use these steps:

1. View | Header and Footer. This puts you in the header pane, and the
Header and Footer toolbar will be displayed.

2. For page numbers in the footer, click the Switch Between Header and
Footer button on the H&F toolbar. This will put you in the footer pane.

3. To insert a { PAGE } field, click on the Insert Page Number (#) button.
If all you want in the footer is a page number, then use paragraph alignment
(Left, Center, or Right) to position it.

4. If you have text other than the page number in the footer, you may want
to use the built-in tab stops. The Header and Footer styles are set up with
two tab stops, a center stop at the center of the default 6" line and a
right tab stop at 6" (the right margin of this line). If you've changed the
margins of your document, you'll need to move these tabs to get the desired
alignment.

If you've already inserted page numbers using Insert | Page Numbers, note
that deleting the page number itself is not sufficient; you must also delete
the frame that contains it, or it will mess up anything you put in the
header/footer. For more on this, see
