Page numbering

I read the Numbering FAQ on the website because to find
out how to change the page number that shows up from
its "actual" page number within the section. For example,
according to the header and footer view one page is Page
2, Section 4 while the next page is Page 4, Section 5.
There are no section breaks shown so I'm not sure why
these two consecutive pages are different sections or how
to make them into one section. I used Ctrl-F9 to insert a
formula {= {PAGE} -1} so that the page number on Page 4,
Section 5 appeared as 3 rather than 4 and it worked fine.
However, after I deleted the table of contents and
replaced it with a new one to reflect the new page
numbering, the page numbers disappeared. I tried using
Ctrl-F9 to enter the formula again, but now it will not
let me type more than one character within a parentheses.
So I can only type {={P}}. I am completely lost about how
to number these pages.

An easy way to see section breaks is to use Normal View: On the View
menu, click Normal.

Although Normal View makes it easy to select and delete section
breaks, this might not be the appropriate thing to do. The reason is
that Word inserts section breaks if you change the number of newspaper
columns in a selection.

In other words, don't delete any section breaks, unless you are
certain that it is OK. (For a detailed description of how sections
work, please see:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WorkWithSections.htm.) Instead,
place the insertion point on a page in section 5. Choose File>Page
Setup, and click the Layout tab. Make sure that "Section start" is
*not* set to "Even page". Usually you want to specify "Next page" for
"Start at", but "Continuos" is sometimes useful (it's the type of
break inserted if you change the number of columns for a selection of
text).

Repeat this procedure for any other sections, if necessary.

Calculated page numbers will not display correctly in a table of
contents. Instead, make sure that page numbering is not restarted on
each section: For each section, choose Insert>Page Numbers. Click
Format. Make sure that "Continue from previous section" is selected,
and click OK. Click Close (don't click OK) to close the Insert Page
Numbers dialog box.

It seems as if you have activated overtype mode by mistake. You can
tell if you note that "OVR" displays on the status bar. Double-click
this abbrevation to turn it off; "OVR" will be greyed out and you'll
be able to edit field codes again.
