page numbering

Michelle

i have a document that i want to start the page numbering on the first
physical page with text (ignorning title page, table of contents etc). it
starts page 1 on the page i want but it is numbering the 3 previous pages
(which are the title page etc) with page numbers also. so it is going 1,2,3,
then starts 1,2,3,4, etc.

i have section breaks on each page prior to the page i want to start
numbering on but it doesn't make a difference.

please help

You don't need a section break after each page of the front matter just from
a numbering standpoint (in most cases a page break will suffice), so I would
suggest that, for simplicity, you first remove the excess section breaks,
leaving only the one between the front matter and the body of the document.
Then View | Header and Footer in Section 2. If your page numbers are in the
footer, switch to the footer. Click on the Same as Previous (or Link to
Previous) button on the Header and Footer toolbar in the header or footer
(to turn it off). Then click Show Previous to return to the header/footer of
Section 1 and delete the page number there.

Sounds like that the Header/Footer (whichever you want the page number in),
on the page you do want the numbering to start, has "Same as previous"
activated?
Deactivate this (click on the icon in the Header/Footer toolbar) and you
should now edit the Headers/Footers to you requirements.

This is for 2003 and prior, not 2007.
Hope this helps.
