Page numbers after merging

W

Word2003

With Word 2003. After merging data to Master Document I would like to number
the pages of the New Document created.
Let's say I have 4 registers in my data file. After the merge I position
cursor at top of last page and the status at bottom left of screen says: Page
1 Sec 4 4/4. Page 1 always says Page 1 wherever the cursor is, making it
impossible to number the pages.

OK, I can cheat and enter the field code "Section" in the New Document or I
can enter the code "MergeRecord#" in the Master Doc., both of which would
falsely create a correct page number - but that only works if the Master
Document is a one-pager.

Am I doing something wrong in the merge?
or is this a Word 2003 error?

Hi =?Utf-8?B?V29yZDIwMDM=?=,

Firstly, if you use the terms "Master document" and "merge" together, you
confuse people :) They have very specific meanings in Word. You should refer to
the "main merge document".

What you're seeing is correct behavior, and it's been this way for over a
decade. The reasoning behind what you're seeing is that each record in a
"letter" type of merge should generate its own, independent result. In regards
to page numbers, each should restart numbering at "1". This is accomplished by
inserting a section break between each record.

In order to have Word do things differently, you have a couple of options:

1. Go into each section and set page numbering to "continue from previous
section" in Insert/Page Number/Format

2. Use a "Directory" type of mail merge, so that Word doesn't insert any
sections breaks
