Page numbers and building blocks

I am also having problems with an inability to get page numbers to work. I
tried to delete the 1033 template according to the workaround instructions,
but I did not see an application data file under documents and settings. I
went to program files and deleted it there but when I restarted Word, my
problem remained. I get one of 2 responses when I try to add page numbers:
(1) Word cannot open this document template...
(2) save selection as page number

Two questions-- first, is there another way to corrent this problem; and
second, if I uninstall Word (or would i have to do all of Office) and
reinstall would my problem go away? It just started a few days ago.

Three things:

- To get access to the Application Data folder, you must click the Tools menu in
Windows Explorer (the file management program, not the Internet browser), choose
Folder Options, click the View tab of the dialog, and click the option to show
hidden files and folders.

- Because you couldn't find the Application Data folder before, you went and
deleted the wrong Building Blocks.dotx file. The one you deleted is the one
Office initially installs; then it makes a copy of it in the Application Data
folder, and that's the one that Word actually uses. So Word is still using the
bad one.

In Word, click Office button > Word Options > Resources > Diagnose, which should
restore the Building Blocks.dotx file under Program Files. Then go to the
correct 1033 folder under Application Data -- after choosing to show hidden
folders -- and delete the Building Blocks.dotx file there instead.

- No, uninstalling and reinstalling will _not_ solve this problem, or any of the
most common problems in Word. The Office installation program deliberately does
not remove customized templates and registry entries, because the theory is that
you may reinstall and want to keep your customizations. Unfortunately, those are
exactly the most common places for problems to be caused.

Thanks. I did what you instructed and I no longer have the 1033 in my list. I
am still not able to use the page number app, though--I am still getting the
same responses. Again, several questions:
Did I reboot wrong--I restarted the computer and started Word--do I need to
do something different there?
In the Application data file, under Word I now have the following: the
Startup folder and 2 stand alone files-- liverecoverysave of doc1.asd and a
dat file, ListGal. Should I delete these 2 files?

When you say "I no longer have the 1033 in my list", exactly what do you mean?
Does the folder

C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Document
Building Blocks\1033

exist, and is there a Building Blocks.dotx file in it?

The contents of the Application Data\Microsoft\Word folder should have nothing
to do with whether you can use building blocks. Leave those files alone.

I see what I did wrong. I found C:\Documents and Settings\<your
name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Document

Building Blocks\1033

and yes it has the file in it--I just delete that, correct?

I deleted the file in > Application Data\Microsoft\Word --can I restore it
from the recycle bin?

I have been reading through these helpful tips for lana, and I have a
similar(Ish) problem, but I dont have anything the file:

C:\Documents and Settings\<yourname>\Application Data\Microsoft\Document
Building Blocks\1033

OR

C:\Documents and Settings\<yourname>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\1033

Is this something anyone has come across before? Are you able to help me
please????

First, let me summarize the way this is supposed to work:

- When Office is installed, it puts the standard Building Blocks.dotx file
in the folder
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Document Parts\1033
(or some number other than 1033 for languages other than US English). The
running software does not use this file; it's only the source for making
fresh copies when needed.

- Whenever Word needs to load building blocks, it tries to load the Building
Blocks.dotx file in the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\<yourname>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1033
(or some other number). If the file isn't there (including the first
time Word runs after installation, or any time after that), it should copy
the file from the one in the Program Files path.

Word doesn't try to load building blocks when it first starts up; it waits
until the first time in the session that you ask to use one, or look at a
gallery that shows them.

So.... If you try to use a building block or open a gallery of building
blocks and nothing happens, and if there is no Building Blocks.dotm in the
folder under Documents and Settings, then the most likely cause is that the
copy of the file under the Program Files path is missing or has some other
problem. Look there; if there is no copy of the file there, repair the
Office installation by going to the Word Options dialog, clicking Resources,
and clicking the Diagnose button.

If there is a copy of the file in the Program Files path, it may be damaged
and unusable. Delete it, and then repair the installation.

Thanks Jay. i have looked under C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office12\Document Parts and there is nothing in this folder at all. I
have done the Diagnostic but it hasnt added/changed/removed anything that
makes this work.

Is there anything else that you know of that I can try?

In the Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs. Select Office 2007 and
click Change. When the installer starts up, choose Repair and click
Continue.

The Diagnostic running from Word should have included this repair
automatically, but I suppose it might have found something that made it
think it wasn't necessary.

When I went into Add/Remove programmes, it said my Office setup was
corrupted. So I have needed to reinstall it again. Since this, it is working
fine now and I can see all the Page numbering options.

I've been having these exact problems and I've tried:

1. deleting building blocks 1033 under Application Data
2. Add/Remove Programs - Microsoft Enterprise "Change" and "Repair"
3. Uninstalling/Reinstalling
4. Windows Diagnostics.

Nothing has worked. Windows Diagnostics said it detected a problem, but
couldn't fix it automatically and directed me to Microsoft's servers, which
just comes up "Problem Loading Page"

Please help.
