page numbers are 0

Ok, here's the deal. I'm working with someone else's documents but modifying them to fit my specifications. When I go in and change the footer to the new form, when it switches to the second section (and all of them after that) the page number is zero. This also appears on the scrollbar indicator. I have page 1 and page 2 but everything else appears as page zero. The originator of the document is not available to ask questions. I've looked everywhere I can think of to find this problem, including msdn. We had this happen a while back, but the other person cannot remember how it was fixed. I'm using Word 2002 and the document is in 97-2002 format. I tried "Un-tick the box at Tools > Templates and Add-Ins > Automatically update document styles" suggestion but it was already unchecked and checking/unchecking did nothing. You guys are my last hope for a speedy resolution. Thanks for the answers in advance.
